Jennifer Perkins' Jewelry Design Class @ Make

Today I had the pleasure of attending a jewelry design class taught by Jennifer Perkins of The Naughty Secretary Club at Make Shop & Studio. Make is located in the Bishop Arts District of Dallas, Texas, a funky cool historic area full of great shops. I am one of those people who has always sworn up & down that I would NOT get into jewelry making. It's too meticulous, too time consuming, just not for me - the list of excuses was a mile long. But after attending Jennifer's class, I am ready to being my great jewelry making adventure!

Jennifer is a laid back kind of gal that you feel like you've known forever even if you've only just made her acquaintance. She has a fun way of explaining her techniques while sprinkling her directions with her own terminology, my favorite being 'doodle,' as in "squeeze this little doodle..." She brought a large stash of beads, pendants & other jewelry making supplies for us to choose from. Each of picked out the items we wanted to use in making a necklace & a pair of earrings and we were given a handy bead design board to lay our piece out on. We then proceeded to follow Jennifer's instructions & began stringing our necklaces. Once we finished that assignment, we moved on to making a pair of earrings which I especially enjoyed.

My biggest challenge when starting a new hobby is knowing which supplies to purchase & how to use them. Jennifer's book, The Naughty Secretary Club: The Working Girl's Guide to Handmade Jewelry has a terrific section explaining the various supplies & tools and tips on how to use them. I purchased the book today, so I haven't had much time to peruse it. However, at first glance I can tell you that the pictures & step-by-step instructions look to be well-written, detailed & easy to understand. The book is very well printed & is full of great eye candy. I would highly recommend taking a class at Make, a terrific shop & studio owned by Julie McCollough Kim. There is a wide variety of classes that are offered ranging from screen printing to sewing. And the atmosphere is so fun & relaxed. The only disappointing part about today's event was that it had to end. I was ready to keep designing & crafting!

Winner - The Naughty Secretary Club

A big thank you to Jennifer Perkins for donating a signed copy of her new book, The Naughty Secretary Club: The Working Girl's Guide to Handmade Jewelry. The winner is....Claudia's Burning Ink! Thank you to all who entered. Check back Monday when our September giveaway kicks off. Preview all the wonderful artists who have donated items this month.

I love the cherry blossom friend card that comes complete with ribbon, eyelets & glitter accents. Another favorite of mine is the puppy-adorned It's Party Time card. TamTam Design also has a nice selection of holiday cards, as well.

Colorful and fun, the small collection is designed to give a new and individual approach to children's wear. The first collection, aimed at little girls, presents a rainbow of items including T-shirts, dresses, hats & more. Bold floral prints meet love hearts and stripes for a playful explosion of color. I absolutely love the hand-embroidered Frida cardigan with red denim jeans. Don't miss the sale section either. Receive a 20% DISCOUNT with coupon code NEWS (enter at checkout).

Wedding Finds

It seems unbelievable that Joe’s wedding & mine was well over a month ago. We were in full-on planning mode for so long, then, all of a sudden, it was over! I really wanted to incorporate a few funky finds into our wedding. Of course, it began as a small affair in Las Vegas, but ended up being a traditional ceremony in our church. But it worked out for the best & we had a ball.

About a month before our wedding, we met up with Kim for a photo shoot. We were thrilled that she was enthusiastic about incorporating our dogs, Abby & Bradley, into the photos. She took photos at several local parks & we were very pleased with the outcome. We framed many of the photos for display at our wedding reception to use as décor.

Jessie Olsen of Cakespy is a talented artist with a fabulous sense of humor. Her work depicts cupcakes doing every day activities, as well as other scenarios. One of my favorite pieces is the Sex & the City cupcakes! Jessie created a custom portrait of Joe and me with our laptop computers (Funky Finds can be seen on mine), our “pupcakes,” and enjoying the outdoors. We proudly displayed the framed illustration at our wedding reception & now in our home.

One of the first images I found online prior to the wedding was one of a wedding bouquet adorned with a ribbon & vintage brooch. I knew that Priscilla at Sweet Remembrance would surely have something perfect to use on my bouquet. And I was right! She sent me a beautiful rhinestone brooch & a large rhinestone button to use.

Originally I had planned on wearing a non-traditional dress that I purchased online from Delia’s. The pink & silver was the basis for our wedding décor and I really wanted to dress it up with custom designed jewelry. Randi-Sue Deckard, the jewelry mastermind behind Designing Diva, designed a gorgeous set of earrings & a necklace that matched my dress to a T. Although I ended up wearing a more traditional gown for our ceremony, I wore the pink & silver dress with Randi-Sue’s jewelry while traveling to Las Vegas for our honeymoon. I got many compliments on my ensemble & accessories!

I designed our invitations based on the silver & pink floral pattern in the dress from Delia’s. I actually had them printed at Office Depot & was pleased with the quality and affordability. I found Paperworks online and ordered white envelopes with a beautiful silver lining that were very affordable. I goofed when placing our order & chose a gold lining by mistake. I contacted customer service via email & received a quick response with a correction to our order. I was relieved!

I have always loved Chinese paper lanterns, as well as cherry blossoms. I really wanted to use paper lanterns to decorate our reception hall. I purchased solid pink and silver lanterns, as well as cherry blossom printed lanterns, from Asian Ideas that fit perfectly with our casual pink & silver theme. I also purchased Chinese takeout boxes from Uline, a great wholesale resource for packaging items, and used these for our favors. We filled the boxes with coffee bean sachets that smelled wonderful, as well as special fortune cookies purchased from Terry’s Village. We also purchased an autograph plate from Terry’s Village as an alternative to a guest book.

I thoroughly enjoyed finding all the small bits that made our special day even more memorable. If you’re looking to add a bit of originality to your wedding or another special occasion, purchasing handmade goods is a great way to do so.

I love the tees made with Swarovski crystals that are also available in custom designs with the number of your choice. The onesies & bottles are also terrific items that show a great sense of humor, as well as spirit for the sport. Showcase your appreciation for motor sports in a stylish & fun way with products from Moto Rose Designs!

Magpie Mary

One definition of a magpie is a person who collects or hoards things. I try my best to avoid being a magpie, but when looking at my craft room some may say I'm just that. I guess most people have some "magpie tendencies." Those who do can relate to the wonderful Magpie Mary shop that is full of miscellaneous treasures ranging from rubber stamps to vintage game numbers. All the lovely items in the vintage jar of tiny things especially piqué my interest. And being the paper hoarder that I am I am extremely tempted to purchase the 60s magazine ads! Have a look at all the interesting & diverse items Magpie Mary has to offer. And receive 15% off (less shipping) until September 30 with discount code FUNKY9. Enter code in the "message to seller" section, check out as usual, and a reimbursement will be made through PayPal.

ManCards for the Thoughtful Gent

I hadn't given it much thought before, but it truly is hard to find masculine note cards. Joe has to use my flowery, girly stationery if he needs to write a note to someone. That's pretty lame! Apparently Kara Magrin felt the same way. Tired of parting with her boutique stationery, she enlisted her husband to help her design a line of manly cards. ManCards for the Thoughtful Gent offers a masculine-casual collection of folded note cards and envelopes that are perfect for sending to family, friends, colleagues and potential business clients. The cards are recreated from original artwork by Kara's husband Michael. I love that the cards come in a utilitarian style metal case. And these cards aren't just for men to use. They are perfect for women to send to men, as well.

LTDchix

Nina Frye and Cindi Schmitzer have seven kids under the age of 12 between them. In 2006, they traded in their everyday jobs to pursue the challenges of raising children. After having children these women realized that sometimes motherhood isn't exactly what they "dreamed" it would be! Their line of tees for moms, Living the Dream, depict a somewhat frazzled mom who manages to keep a smile on her face during all the different tasks of a mom's daily life - whether she is a stay-at-home mom or balancing the responsibilities of office and home. Their alternative, fun clothing line is custom designed exclusively for modern moms with a sense of humor. The 100% cotton shirts feature a variety of tongue-in-cheek illustrations depicting the daily trials of today's Mom. Living the Dream targets women contending with the fact that motherhood isn't exactly what they expected it to be. These shirts show Mom in a variety of typical situations -- buried in laundry, managing the chaos of grocery shopping with multiple kids, accepting the futility of housecleaning and cruising in her mini-van with all the offspring in tow. "These shirts are a fun way for us to laugh at ourselves and at the wacky situations we find ourselves in on a daily basis," Schmitzer says. Frye adds, "The Mom on our shirts is overwhelmed like so many of us can be. But she's happy, and she keeps the family going. She really is 'Living the Dream' - just not exactly the dream she expected." LTDChix is dedicated to continually adding unique designs, like the great Halloween tee. Receive a 15% discount by entering 14blog in the coupon code section at checkout (expires September 30).

I am already looking forward to next weekend! Saturday, September 20, Jennifer Perkins of Naughty Secretary Club will be guest instructor at Make Shop & Studio in Dallas, Texas. Following the class, Jennifer will be having a book signing for her new book The Naughty Secretary Club: The Working Girl's Guide to Handmade Jewelry. I hope to see you there!

EFA Artists Helping Animals Birthday Bash

EFA Artists Helping Animals is a team of more than 500 animal lovers with individual shops on Etsy. The EFA Team Store is a cooperative and all volunteer shop that donates all profits to the EFA Animal Charity of the Month, an animal charity of choice nominated by an EFA member. Since the opening of the EFA Team Store in September 2007, the store has provided over $4,200 of charitable relief to animal organizations! To celebrate this amazing accomplishment along with their 1st Birthday, EFA members are offering a 20% off coupon valid from September 15 to 30. This coupon is redeemable at the EFA Team Store as well as over 150 EFA member stores. Each shop has its own unique coupon code; however, any coupon code can be used in any EFA member’s shop. In fact, there is a contest for the members who bring in the most sales for their code. For example, the code for Moon’s Harvest is “MOON.” For more information and a list of participating stores, see the EFA Artists Helping Animals website.

September profits of the EFA Team Store profits will be going to the Highland County Humane Society, a no-kill shelter that serves a very large rural area in Ohio. EFA member, Tammy, who volunteers at the shelter, nominated the organization. Tammy says, “This shelter cares for all the stray, sick, injured, and ‘throw-away’ animals in my area. Although more people have been dropping off animals, fewer people have been donating. They do not like to turn any away, but without help they may have to. They are not just in need, they are in desperate need!” Members of EFA can contribute items from their individual shops for sale in the EFA Team Store, with 100 percent of the profits going to the Charity of the Month. In addition, many members of EFA donate 10 to 100 percent of their sales or profits to either the EFA Charity of the Month or other animal charities. As of June 2008, EFA members had donated almost $10,000 to various animal charities in the United States. This is a great opportunity to get a jump-start on holiday shopping while contributing to a very important charitable organization.
